I bought a Digital Cassete and a Printer for my HP41CX.
I have 2 transformers and I do not know what each one is.

- 82087A and
- 82059D. Does anyone know who each one is?

Thanks a lot!

All of mine are 82059D. Does the other one (the 82087A) look the same? Does it say 90-120VAC input and 8VAC output, and have the same plug?

I never heard of an 82087A, but the 82087B and 82087D are only used with the SPICE series (HP-31/32/33/34/37/38 models - It is likely that the 82087A is simply an earlier model of these other SPICE chargers) and should NOT be used with the printer, although the connector is totally different anyhow and it would not connect. It's possible someone has added the 82059D style connector to that adapter, but still do NOT use it.

In addition to the 82059D adapter, these models can also be used with the drive: 82040A, 82059A, 82059B. Other models are also available for use in other countries (i.e. different wall voltage and connector types).

Description:

82059D = USACHARGER : IN:90-120VAC 50-60Hz 7VA OUT: 8VAC 3VA MAX
82087A = USACHARGER : IN:90-120VAC 50-60Hz OUT:10VAC 1,8VA MAX

Both have the same look, plug included.

So the 82059D (8vac) can I use it for both, cassette and printer?

And 82087A nothing related to hp41?

Thanks.

Yes. I believe I got 82059D's (an no other) with my HP82161A microcassette drives, HP2225B Thinkjet printer, HP-71B handheld computer, and HP82169A HPIL-to-IEEE488 interface converter. I also have the HP82165A HPIL-to-parallel interface converter that takes the same one but came without it since I bought it used, and the HP92198A HPIL 80-column video interface which takes a different one (and has a different plug). My FSI164A HPIL-to-RS232 interface converter is almost 100% compatible with the HP82164A although has a couple of good features the HP one doesn't have, and it has a different power supply too, but it's an FSI product, not HP.

I don't understand why they send me the 82087A adapter if it was not for any peripheral that I bought.

Thank you, both of them , for helping me and for answering so quickly.

Someone (maybe not the person that sold it to you?) has added a device plug from the 41/71/75/HP-IL devices to the charger housing on the 82087A, for unknown reasons. You can see the power output is different, and I strongly suggest that you DO NOT USE the 82087A unit with your 41 or tape drive, etc.

The higher voltage could hurt the device and even if it does not damage it, the lower current could be insufficient for powering the Tape Drive, even with a good battery installed.

You can see the standard connector type on the 82087A here: https://www.bonanza.com/items/like/494787941/HP-82087a-AC-Charger-Power-Adapter-for-vintage-HP-calculator-untested, which is only used with the Spice series calculator models as noted above.

Someone posted a similar incorrect 82087A adapter once on the MoHPC Forum in 2014, here: https://www.hpmuseum.org/forum/thread-1364.html. Possibly this is the same person??

Anyhow, don't use it, just to be safe.
