RS232

Hi All
Not sure if this is the correct section but just a heads up on using the PIL-IO box for RS232.
For a lower cost alternative to the HP-IL-RS232 interface, I have found a rather nifty little module by Digilent model PmodRS232 UART-RS232 Converter Module. This module converts UART to RS232, just connect to the UART output of the PIL-IO box and you have RS232 level signals out i.e. a HP-IL to RS232 Interface! Successfully used to control a RS232 plotter.

That seems like a lot to pay when a $2 SN75C1406 triple line driver and receiver IC (same thing as the MC145406) and a $.50 connector would do, or the 1488 line driver and 1489 line receiver which I've seen as low as $.29 each. However, I spent something like $150 decades ago for the FSI164A HPIL-to-RS232 interface converter which is almost identical to the more-expensive HP82164A, except the FSI unit came with two RS-232 channels standard, and optionally up to eight, and could also optionally run on battery power. I used it a lot in the early years, and continue to use it occasionally, and probably will use it for a work project this month.

Well yes I do agree about the initial price but it comes all packaged and 'plug n play' and is still a lot cheaper than the 82164A and when using discreet components there is the extra cost of moving from the breadboard to a 'practical' implementation. Furthermore, used with the PIL-IO the option for using GPIO is also there providing application flexibility in a practical package.
