go41cx emulator XYZALM command does not fully work

go41cx emulator XYZALM command does not fully work

Postby Rpnbest » Mon Feb 10, 2025 4:38 pm

I am using the go41cx emulator 1.9.4 on a Pixel 7 - Android Version 15

The emulator works fine but have encountered a couple of issues related to the alarm function.

When using the XYZALM command its supposed to display the contents of the Alpha register and sound an alarm when triggered. I find that the command on at least my phone does display the contents of the alpha register, but there is no associated audio with the alarm. Note that the TONE and BEEP commands work properly. I also noticed that the iPhone version of the 41cx emulator i41cx+ it works correctly.

The second problem is that if you set the alarm using the XYZALM and then you open another app the alarm will not work, which makes this alarm function on the emulator useless. Yet the Stop watch works perfectly in the background even with the phone is shutoff. I would expect the alarm function to work in the background as well. The clock function on the emulator works fine in the background as well, i.e keeps proper time.

Anyone else seen this issue? Do I have something configured incorrectly?

TIA

I was hoping someone would be able to try this to see if it's an issue with my pixel/setup or an emulator issue.

If someone could try it using the go41cx emulator that would be appreciated.

load the alpha register with "Test Alarm"
y register with a 0
z register with a 0

XEQ Time ; to get the present time set on the Calc

Put in the X register the time for the alarm to go off like a minute ahead of the present time in the format HH.MMSS
XEQ XYZALM
when time reaches the set time you should get audible tones and the display should flash the content of the alpha register (Test Alarm).

In my case I get the correct contents of the alpha register, but no audible alarm.

The other big issue for me is that the alarm function does not work in the background, i.e. if you open another app. Which is a bigger problem, but one issue at a time.

TIA

Wow! 2000 viewers and no one can spend literally 3 minutes to try this request and post results where everyone can benefit from the feedback.

Surprisingly a quiet group!

I'm surprised at the reported number of views, and I wonder if it's correct; but I myself don't have go41cx, nor do I use a cell phone.  I wonder how many members here have and use go41cx.

Thanks for replying Garth.

Yeah, that does sound like a rather large number of viewers.

I have been using the HP41CV since the early 80's in College and the whole Engineering career and it still my favorite calculator. However, being able to use the go41cx emulator on the cellphone when on the go would be icing on the cake since we always carry the cellphones on us everywhere.

I am just trying to understand some of the emulators shortcomings so that I know what they are.

I have posted the same question on a different forum, will see if there is any feedback.

Thanks

I don't use a cell phone, so no, I don't have it with me all the time; but I would like to have my 41's function on my laptop which I take to work.  The algebraic calculator I have on the laptop is miserable compared to my 41cx with its RPN, and this 41 is too valuable to take to work regularly and risk theft or damage.  I do take it if I anticipate needing it, but I don't take it every day.  Since your question is about the alarm functions on the go41cx, I'll mention that I do use the time & alarm functions regularly on my 41cx.  However, the entire reason I got into the 41 was HP-IL, which none of the so-called emulators have.  I don't use HP-IL very often anymore, but I used it last night with the 41 to display a big table on the monitor with my HP92198 80-column HP-IL video interface, and I've used it recently with my HP3314A function generator (with my HP82169A HPIL-to-IEEE488 interface converter) since some functions are easier to figure out how to achieve with its command language than on its complex and confusing front panel.  At a past job in the late 1980's, I was interfacing my 41cx to a half-dozen lab instruments at the same time via HP-IL, using big test programs.  I might eventually get a DM41x from SwissMicros; but since my two 41cx's still work fine, I can wait, and maybe SM will eventually do HP-IL.

Yep, the DM41x does sound like a nice machine. Maybe someday I will get one. Right now I have 2-41CVs and don't use them much since I retired. That's why having the emulator with you all the time would be a nice option for me to still have the HP41 functionality whenever I need it.

I do take out the 41CV out occasionally, just have to remember to remove the batteries when not used for an extended amount of time. Many 41's have been damaged from battery leaks which is a shame.

Thanks Garth!

I have two 41cx's, the second one having been given to me not long ago, which I keep as a backup, in case the first one ever goes down. (It has been going strong for almost 40 years though.) I do keep batteries in both, but I check them periodically. The main 41cx I use used to go years on a set of batteries, until I got a double XMem module, and that took the battery life down to ten weeks. It's still worth it though to have the six hundred and some XMem registers for files. I change the batteries immediately when the low-battery indicator comes on, and change them quickly to make sure I don't lose any memory. There are programs I've had in there for probably 30 years, never having had to reload. Try that with consumer electronics! I have a Clonix-D module from Diego in my main 41, with a lot of ROM module images in its flash, including the ZENROM and Advantage modules so then I was able to put those two physical modules in backup 41. The 41MAXX Module should be available soon to further improve things, giving the 41 many of the 41CL capabilities, and it would be nice to have that in both 41's.

I would have try it, but I have an iPhone 13 mini, so i did not replied.
Also, since I have an extensive collection with 20+ HP-41s, I rarely use emulators/simulators.
Garth, Monte has started to sell his MAXX module (ver. 5B), I just ordered two today, send him en email, he will send you a order form.

Thanks Sylvain!

I also posted it on the MoHCP forum and got a quick response from the moderator and he confirmed that he was also seeing the same issue.
