HP 82161A sans Battery

I dont have a battery for this unit.
I plugged in the AC adaptor and executed "DIR"
After a short delay I receive the massage "TRANSMIT ERR"
Is this because a battery has to be installed? There is an EBay listing for this battery, if I needed it I can get it.

The manual says that message means the loop is broken (ie, not connected in a loop) or one or more devices on the loop are not turned on; so I guess it means the drive won't work without the battery.  I know I've used mine with a DC power supply clipped to the battery contacts; but it sounds like you don't have that available to you.
